Chapter Fifteen
Atalanta
"Jason?"
I called into the Men's bathroom. I had seen him practically sprinting this way when he suddenly bailed on me on the lake. I didn't know what was up with him. One moment we were talking and the next he went all rigid and booked it.
I worried he had caught me in my lie. The lie that my mother was dead, when in reality she was alive, probably behind bars or padded walls. Yet, the normal reaction I was used to when caught in a lie was to be confronted about it or ignored. Not running away.
So, after several minutes of waiting on the slippery ice, I followed him, being sure to swap out my skates for my normal boots that we had left at a spot near the shore.
It was a little upsetting as up until now the date had been pretty magical. Well, besides the interrogating questions I had to answer knowing that I really couldn't give the full truth for a lot of them.
I knocked on the side of the wall, the dull thudding just barely echoing into space.
I called again, "Jason, are you in here?"
This time he did answer, his voice guttural. "Yeah, Iâm sorryâ¦I kind of had a bout of⦠diarrhea?â
I donât know why I would have thought he would have learned how to lie in the last twenty-four hours, but I decided to go along with it nonetheless.
âI hope you didnât get food poisoning from lunch.â
âI might haveâ¦do you mind? I should be done in a minute,â he said, his voice slowly returning to its normal tone.
âOkay, Iâll be outside,â I replied.
I backed away from the bathroom's entrance and leaned against the concrete. I could only hope I was overthinking, and he was telling the truth.
I bit the corner of my lip. He didnât owe me any truths because I hadnât done much to deserve it. Yet the little flame of curiosity inside me wondered if he ran because of what I said, or if it had something to do with what I learned yesterday.
Initially, I had thought to use today as a way to get some answers out of him. But then he was sweet and adorable, bringing me to this lake and helping me get my footing on the icy ground. He was noticing the oddness of my situation. The money struggles, Dadâs experience as an investigator, and unlike Percy and Hip, who seemed to see things instantly but kept quiet, slowly trying to coax answers out of me naturally, Jason was more upfront, asking me directly what was up. I was afraid that if I began to poke around with his situation, he would do the same and next thing you know weâd be having to pack up again.
"Sorry about that." I looked up to see Jason coming out of the bathroom.
He looked alright, if a little pale.
"Are you feeling okay?â I asked, concerned.
"Yeah, I didn't mean to run off like that. I just didn't want to shout out my sudden need for the toilet,â he replied with a shaky smile.
